The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest, international Catholic fraternal service organization, founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut. The parish-based Knights councils directly support the efforts and vision of the pastor and parish clergy in order to stimulate and grow Catholic faith communities through charitable works. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are “practical” (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. Since its founding, the Knights of Columbus has understood “practical Catholic” to mean a Catholic who accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
