The purpose of this ministry is to crochet and knit shawls and lap blankets for St. Rita’s parishioners who are homebound or seriously ill. Our goal is to remind them that their church has not forgotten them. These are made for men, women, or children whenever the need arises.
This ministry includes a group of women who have volunteered their time and skills to work on each item, praying for the recipient as she works. After knitting or crocheting for only two or three days it is passed on to another worker. Before passing it on, she and any well-wishers sign the specially designed card, so many hands and prayers are involved in the project.
After the item is finished a medal of St. Rita is attached, then it is boxed along with a small Pocket Prayer Cloth with this message:
“This pocket prayer cloth was made especially for you. It is meant to bring you comfort by symbolizing God’s love for you and for your health and well-being. Slip it in your purse or pocket, keep it by your bedside or use it in any way you wish that might bring you comfort. When your fingers touch it remember you are not alone, for God is with you.”
Then the lap blanket or shawl is blessed by Fr. Tom or another priest in his absence.
We have also been blessed to be able to share our talents knowing the joy these recipients will receive. This ministry is funded solely by monetary donations. We welcome all knitters and crocheters; patterns and materials are provided.
